Criticism of the plan to blow up the Dome of the Rock focused on the roles of human and divine action in the messianic process. Party leaders, political and spiritual alike, attacked Yehuda Etzion’s theology of active redemption as a clear deviation from the major tenets of religious Zionism. The Underground was ‘forcing the end’, and therefore guilty of false messianism. 24 This was clearly not the case with regard to the PLO. It was always referred to in the most damning terms and often compared to the Nazis.

12 Almost 20 years after independence this trend came to an abrupt end. In the wake of the Six Day War there was a ‘renewed ideologization’ of Israeli politics (Galnoor, 1980: 128). The question of the boundaries of the state was no longer just a theoretical one, and it therefore returned to the top of the national agenda. Not surprisingly, the renewed debate about the future of the occupied or liberated territories13 mirrored, to a large extent at least, the controversy that raged between Labour and Revisionist Zionism during the period of the Yishuv.

Both were beyond the pale. With the passage of time, marked changes have taken place in the fortunes of Mapai and Herut. This is partly due to demographic factors. Those sectors of the population who registered support for Herut – Jews of Oriental origin and younger voters – were steadily increasing, thereby accounting for a larger share of the electorate, while groups traditionally supportive of Labour were shrinking in size. However, this is by no means the whole story. Important developments also took place within Herut itself, and in Israeli politics in general.
