At Tulkinghorn's he identifies a veiled lady as the one who questioned him about Nemo until he realises that her hands and voice are different. She is, in fact, Lady Dedlock's former maid Hortense! Jo and Hortense leave, and Bucket urges Snagsby to say nothing of the night's events. Commentary At the narrative level detective Bucket begins to try to discover the identity of the veiled lady who was so interested in Nemo - and the reader joins in the detective work, too.
